What's on your shoulder?

Glamour April 2010 page 83 Versace bag (cute!) Going price: $3,950

"Malaria is one of the deadliest diseases impacting poor children around the world. The disease kills more than 2,000 children every day and now is the #1 killer of children in many of the places where World Vision works.

Every $6 you give will provide a long-lasting insecticide-treated bed net that will protect the life of two or more children from this deadly disease. Since these nets can be used for approximately four years, that means you will save the life of a child for only 6 cents a month! It's one of the best investments you’ll ever make!" http://donate.worldvision.org/OA_HTML/xxwv2ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?funnel=dn&item=1849059&go=item&

One cute Versace bag = 658 treated mosquito nets = the potential to save a minimum of 1,316 children.

  1. I'm not sure which surprises me more: that these bags can be so expensive, or that the mosquito nets are so cheap. That's the sort of thing more people need to know about.

  2. You are right on target: more people need to know about these things, which is the premise of Who Cares? Thank you for taking the time to look at this, and please, inform your friends and act on it!

  3. I'm amazed that it's even possible to spend $4,000 on a bag. I wouldn't get a fraction of that much for my car, and it holds a lot more than a handbag. Seriously, what does a $4k handbag do that a $40 one doesn't? Does it hold a hundred times more stuff?

  4. While some designer bags are made of uncommon or luxurious materials and may be made in areas other than those that exploit cheap labor, I believe MUCH of the price goes to the STATUS SYMBOL of owning a bag made by Versace, Dooney & Burke, Coach, etc. People are paying companies to advertise FOR THEM. I see Coach bags everywhere; so essentially, they just forked out hundreds to thousands of dollars for Coach to get more advertising.

Why can't we make fashion stand for something other than money? That is what I am trying to accomplish with Who Cares? LLC. Most women know what the back-to-back "C" means on a bag: Coach, and that means you just spent a lot of money on that bag. Why can't you declare to the world that instead of handing Coach another few hundred bucks, give it to a non-profit and also strike up a conversation with the woman standing behind you in line at the grocery store about the story behind the Who Cares? LLC bag you are carrying.

The same for tee-shirts: this is a walking billboard. How many shirts do you read a day? Why not take that opportunity to tell others about an issue that is important to you and then discuss how to alleviate the problem?

  5. You are too right. And for the price of that bag you could send 3 kids to school for a full year at one of the best schools in Tanzania. What could be more important than health, safety and education? Way to put things in perspective Jessy!
